Invisalign and other clear aligners: what is the difference?

Comparing Invisalign with ‘clear aligners’ is not a comparison between two entirely different appliance types.

Invisalign is a brand within the clear-aligner category

Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner. Clear aligners are the broader category of removable trays used in a planned sequence to move teeth. When comparing systems, look at the intended treatment and the care included. Our guide to aligners versus fixed braces compares appliance categories. [1][2]

Start with the problem being treated

BOS describes aligners as commonly used for selected irregularity and spacing, while severe crowding, extractions, complex movements and underlying jaw discrepancies may need additional techniques. Ask why the recommended system suits your actual movements and what the alternatives are. A brand name cannot replace the assessment and treatment plan. [1]

Compare packages with the same endpoint

A limited front-tooth plan and comprehensive treatment of both arches are different proposals. Ask which teeth and bite changes are included and whether the fee covers assessment, attachments, enamel reduction if indicated, reviews, replacement trays, refinements and retainers. Confirm exclusions in the written estimate instead of assuming that the same package label means the same care.

Identify the clinician and the review arrangements

Ask who diagnoses the problem, who monitors progress and who can examine you if there is pain, gum inflammation or a persistent fit problem. BOS emphasises proper assessment and planning for aligner treatment. An online progress tool may contribute to communication, but the plan should still explain responsibility for clinical review and changes to treatment. [1]

Ask for evidence matched to the proposed claim

Research on Invisalign shows that predictability varies with the movement and the case. It does not rank every other aligner brand. A claim about a plastic material or attachment may describe laboratory testing rather than better results for patients, so the evidence needs to match the benefit being discussed. [3]

Include aftercare when judging value

Retention is part of the commitment after active alignment. Compare who supplies the retainer, its instructions, continuing reviews and repair or replacement arrangements. A lower initial fee can represent a different treatment scope, while a higher fee alone is not proof of a better result. The comparison should make the included care and clinically reasonable alternatives clear. [4]
