Open Bites, Midline Shifts and Narrow Smiles: Invisalign Options
A front open bite, an off-centre dental midline and a narrow-looking smile are often discussed together because they affect photographs.

What does Diamond Apex Invisalign Provider mean?
Diamond Apex is an Invisalign provider tier recognising high annual treatment volume. It reflects extensive experience with the Invisalign system. Your treatment is planned around your teeth, bite and goals, with clinical reviews and retention discussed from the outset.
Invisalign may improve selected open bites, dental midline shifts or narrow-looking smiles, but suitability depends on what causes the appearance. An open bite concerns front-tooth contact; an off-centre midline can come from tooth positions or jaw relationships; smile width depends partly on tooth angles and arch shape. These need separate assessments even when they appear together in photographs.
Can Invisalign close a front open bite?
A front open bite means some front teeth do not touch when the back teeth meet. Tooth positions, jaw or skeletal relationships, tongue posture and habits can all contribute. Selected dental open bites may respond to aligners, with planned changes to front-tooth height or control of the back teeth. Other cases need fixed appliances or referral. Stability depends on addressing relevant causes, function and retention, not simply closing the gap in a front-view simulation. The assessment needs to consider where the teeth meet during chewing as well as the appearance.
Can Invisalign correct a front-tooth midline shift?
The centre lines of the upper teeth, lower teeth and face do not always coincide. An offset may come from asymmetric tooth positions, missing teeth, crowding, a shift on closing or differences between the jaws. The clinician checks facial landmarks, root positions and the bite before recommending movement. A small offset may be reasonable to leave alone when function is comfortable. Larger corrections can require asymmetric forces and careful anchorage, and visually centring the front teeth could worsen contacts at the sides. Moving teeth cannot necessarily correct skeletal asymmetry or change the centre of the face. Camera distortion and head tilt also affect selfies, so agree a realistic goal for symmetry, function and stability.
Can Invisalign make a narrow smile appear wider?
A narrow-looking smile can reflect inward-tilted teeth, arch shape, spaces between the cheeks and teeth, lip position or the width of the jaws. The assessment checks crowding, the side-to-side bite relationship and gum and bone support. Limited dental expansion may be possible, but moving crowns outwards is different from expanding the adult jaw. Pushing roots beyond supporting bone can threaten gum health and stability, particularly with thin tissues. The plan should identify which structure would change and how much movement is appropriate, rather than promise a wider photograph without regard to those limits.
What overlap, midlines and width changes can affect
A change in front tooth overlap may alter speech, chewing and how the teeth meet at rest. A corrected dental midline need not coincide perfectly with the centre of the face, especially where the jaws themselves are asymmetric. Likewise, a 'wider smile' in photographs may reflect how visible teeth are angled rather than actual skeletal enlargement. These distinctions should be explained before patients judge the treatment solely by the digital before-and-after image.
Separating tooth movement from jaw changes
The diagnosis helps separate changes that can be achieved by moving teeth from those involving the jaws. Some goals need more complex techniques or a different appliance. Choose a plan that explains its intended bite and appearance benefits together; a broader-looking smile alone does not demonstrate expansion of the underlying jaws.
