Choosing dental care
Bite correction versus cosmetic alignment: choosing goals
Orthodontic care may address crowding, spaces, the relationship between upper and lower teeth or difficulties with chewing and cleaning.
Get answers before you decide
Choosing dental care should feel straightforward. A £30 consultation gives you the opportunity to explain your wishes, ask about our approach and understand your options.

Straight front teeth and a planned bite are different outcomes
Cosmetic alignment focuses on how the teeth look; bite correction also considers how the upper and lower teeth meet and work together. Orthodontic treatment may address crowding, gaps or difficulties with chewing and cleaning. A front-view image cannot show all these needs, so the assessment should establish which findings matter for you and what the proposed treatment would change. [1]
Make the endpoint explicit
A clear plan sets out the movements needed and any concerns the proposed appliance would leave unaddressed. The British Orthodontic Society identifies complex movements and differences between the jaws as reasons additional techniques may be needed. A limited cosmetic goal can still be discussed, provided you understand its scope before agreeing treatment. [2]
Use evidence matched to the case
Studies comparing aligners with fixed braces need to be read in the context of the cases treated. One review found that whether teeth had been extracted affected how treatment quality could be interpreted. Those results can inform the discussion, but cannot define the right endpoint for every person with a bite concern. [3]
Agree the trade-offs and continuing care
Before deciding, consider the expected benefits, risks, alternatives, complete cost and the retainers needed afterwards. If an appearance-focused plan would leave another clinical concern untreated, the clinician should explain what that means for you. Consent needs to cover your actual plan and its limits, with realistic expectations for the smile and bite. [4]
