Invisalign with Missing Teeth, Extraction Spaces and Front-Tooth Gaps
A gap caused by a missing tooth has different treatment implications from a small space between otherwise healthy incisors.

What does Diamond Apex Invisalign Provider mean?
Diamond Apex is an Invisalign provider tier recognising high annual treatment volume. It reflects extensive experience with the Invisalign system. Your treatment is planned around your teeth, bite and goals, with clinical reviews and retention discussed from the outset.
Invisalign can sometimes close a gap or help prepare the right space for a replacement tooth. A missing-tooth gap needs a different plan from a small space between healthy incisors. The choice between closure and an implant, bridge or other replacement affects root positions, gum shape, bite contacts and future restorations.
Can aligners close a space from a previously extracted tooth?
An old extraction space may have lost bone, narrowed or developed tilted neighbouring teeth. The assessment considers root angles, gum and bone support, the bite and teeth available to help control movement. Closing a long molar space can need more anchorage and root control than closing a small gap at the front, and movement through a reduced ridge may be slow or biologically limited. In some cases closure is practical; in others, keeping or creating space for a replacement is preferable. For an implant, separation between the roots matters as much as the visible crown gap. Implants cannot move with later orthodontics, so the final bite and cleaning access need planning before placement.
Can Invisalign be planned around a missing tooth?
Before moving teeth around a missing one, agree whether the aim is to close the space or retain it for replacement. Missing teeth change how forces are supported and where neighbouring crowns and roots need to finish. The orthodontic and restorative clinicians should coordinate requirements for a bridge, implant or other restoration; premature closure or implant placement can limit later options. A tooth-shaped placeholder in an aligner is temporary, with the cost and timing of permanent replacement needing a separate discussion.
Can Invisalign close a large front-tooth gap?
A large front gap, or diastema, can reflect tooth size and position, missing teeth, habits, gum disease or the attachment between the upper lip and gum. That attachment may be incidental rather than the cause. Measurements establish root positions, tooth proportions and where spaces might appear as teeth move. Alignment may close the gap, while selected composite additions may improve narrow tooth proportions, either alone or after movement. These options should be compared with leaving the space as it is. Underlying causes and long-term retention matter because gaps can reopen. Enlarging crowns or veneers cannot reliably camouflage an unstable gap, and a simulation of crowns meeting does not establish root alignment.
Planning room for a crown and its roots
For example, the space needed for a future crown may differ from the gap currently visible, and the roots must also be far enough apart. Treatment may include a temporary tooth to preserve appearance while the space is managed. Before starting, you should understand whether full closure is realistic, what the final bite would be and how any temporary replacement fits the sequence.
Agree whether the space will close or remain
Agree the endpoint before choosing aligners: complete orthodontic closure or preparation for restorative treatment. For a front gap, the assessment also considers tooth size, gum attachment and how the teeth meet. The plan should explain both the visible result and the root positions and retention needed to support it.
