Root health, wisdom-tooth findings and the severity of an overbite can all affect Invisalign planning. Orthodontic movement can shorten roots in some people, so the history and anatomy matter. Wisdom teeth do not automatically need removal, and a severe overbite may need more than alignment of the visible front teeth.

Can Invisalign shorten tooth roots?

Root shortening can occur during orthodontic tooth movement, including with aligners. It is called external apical root resorption, and individual susceptibility is uncertain. Root shape, previous trauma, treatment history and existing findings help guide the assessment. Biology and the forces used matter, rather than the brand alone; aligners cannot promise zero risk. For a higher-risk tooth, aims, forces or monitoring may need adjustment. X-rays should be justified clinically, balancing useful information against radiation exposure rather than taking them routinely without an indication. Previous trauma or unexplained mobility may affect that decision.

Can Invisalign treat a severe overbite in adults?

An overbite is the vertical overlap of the front teeth; an overjet is their horizontal projection. A deep overbite may involve tooth angles, over-eruption, jaw position or a combination, and can wear lower incisors or injure the tissues behind the upper teeth. The assessment checks these contacts and the jaw relationship. Selected aligner plans can move teeth further into the supporting tissues, adjust angles or control back-tooth positions, but complex cases may need fixed braces, combined care or referral. Dental movement and correction of a significant jaw discrepancy are different aims. The plan should explain the realistic bite change, how it will be measured and how adequate clearance and reduced trauma will be achieved.

Do wisdom teeth need extracting before clear aligners?

Wisdom teeth are assessed on their own merits, including symptoms, decay, infection, gum problems, eruption, impaction and whether their position obstructs planned movements. Investigations are used when clinically indicated. Healthy wisdom teeth can often be retained; extraction has surgical risks and needs its own indication and consent. Removing them solely to prevent crowding is not a reliable replacement for retainers and cannot guarantee that the front teeth will stay aligned.

Why a previously injured tooth needs particular records

For example, a tooth with previous trauma may need a different monitoring plan from an otherwise similar tooth with no such history. Records and justified imaging can identify existing shortening or other relevant findings. The team should explain which changes would alter the treatment, rather than describe root resorption as either inevitable or impossible.

Agreeing root and wisdom-tooth monitoring

Before starting, understand the findings on root form, any existing resorption, wisdom-tooth position and the bite. The clinician can explain what needs monitoring and which complications could change the plan. Any proposal to remove a wisdom tooth should have a clear clinical reason alongside its risks and alternatives.
