Sport, hygiene and teenage fixed braces

Fixed braces can trap plaque around brackets and make interdental cleaning harder, so teenagers need practical techniques rather than vague instructions to brush more often.

Dental hygiene, gum health assessment and care

Teenagers with fixed braces can take part in sport with appropriate protection and keep their mouths healthy with a workable cleaning routine. Brackets and wires create extra plaque traps, so the technique needs to be demonstrated. For contact sports, a mouthguard must also accommodate the appliance and teeth that are still moving.

Braces and contact sports: protective mouthguards

The orthodontic team can help choose a sports mouthguard for the activity, brackets and stage of tooth movement. Orthodontic-compatible guards may accommodate changing positions better than a rigid guard moulded before treatment. A poor fit can injure soft tissues, dislodge brackets or provide inadequate protection. Fit needs reviewing as the teeth and arch change, with replacement or refitting where needed. Check the sport's governing-body requirements as well as the team's advice.

Teenage oral hygiene with braces

Plaque can collect around brackets, along the gum line and beneath wires. A review can check brushing, snack and sugar frequency, gum bleeding and early white marks from enamel losing minerals. Disclosing plaque can make missed areas visible, while appropriately sized interdental brushes, fluoride toothpaste and practical coaching help improve access. Parents may need to support the routine, with encouragement and progress reviews. Poor cleaning can delay or interrupt elective orthodontics, so new white marks merit early attention. Baby and adult teeth differ in anatomy and eruption, which also affects how injuries are managed; the team should know which teeth are involved.

Finding cleaning aids a teenager can use

For example, a teenager may manage an interdental brush around brackets more easily than floss, while another may benefit from a floss threader. Access and hand control determine the useful aid. A wire irritating the cheek may need temporary protective wax and prompt contact with the team. Broken hardware deserves review because it can alter the forces applied as well as cause discomfort.

Why a normal sports mouthguard may not be suitable

A rigid guard fitted before treatment may soon become inaccurate or catch against a brace. For rugby, hockey, martial arts or other contact activities, choose protection with the treating team so it can work without locking onto brackets or obstructing movement. Pain or a guard that repeatedly falls out means the fit needs attention.

A realistic cleaning routine for a school day

For a school day, plan suitable cleaning aids to carry and follow the team's advice after meals. Interdental brushes can reach accessible areas around brackets and beneath wires, alongside fluoride toothpaste. This is easier to sustain than relying on one rushed evening brush. Gum bleeding, broken wires, white opaque marks or difficulty cleaning are reasons to contact the practice between adjustments.

Agreeing protection and help between visits

Before treatment starts, the teenager and parent or carer should understand the cleaning method, fluoride advice, sport protection and route for help between visits. That makes it easier to respond early to a broken bracket, swelling or a new white mark.
