Teen orthodontics and oral hygiene readiness
A fixed brace adds surfaces and spaces that need cleaning. NHS advice includes fluoride toothpaste, daily interdental cleaning around the appliance and continuing dental check-ups.

Readiness includes looking after the teeth during treatment
Readiness for a fixed brace includes being able to keep the teeth and appliance clean throughout treatment. There will be extra surfaces and spaces to reach. NHS advice includes fluoride toothpaste, daily cleaning between teeth and around the brace, and continuing dental check-ups. Before starting, the teenager and their parent or carer should understand how that routine will work. [1]
Identify practical barriers early
A practical demonstration helps the teenager try the cleaning method before relying on it at home. Difficulty controlling a brush, keeping motivated or managing another support need can all affect the routine. UK guidance recognises that some people need help or adaptations; the aim is to find a method they can use effectively, rather than simply buy more products. [2]
Food and appliance care are related
Food choices also form part of looking after a brace. NHS guidance advises limiting sugary food and drink and avoiding hard, crunchy or sticky items that can damage it. Planning around school, sport and other daily activities can make those instructions easier to follow consistently. [1]
Know when to ask for help
The orthodontist should hear about a broken brace, ongoing pain or gums that are very red, swollen or painful. Routine brace adjustments do not replace general dental examinations. Keeping both types of appointment helps the teams look after tooth movement and mouth health throughout treatment. [1]
