Choosing dental care
Comparing dental quotes: make the inclusions equivalent
Ask what each quotation is intended to achieve and which teeth or structures it covers.
Get answers before you decide
Choosing dental care should feel straightforward. A £30 consultation gives you the opportunity to explain your wishes, ask about our approach and understand your options.

Start with the same problem and endpoint
You can only compare dental quotes fairly once you know what each would achieve. Repairing one tooth, restoring several teeth and rebuilding a whole bite involve different amounts of care. A price difference may simply reflect a different plan, so start with the diagnosis and intended result.
List what is included
Check assessment, imaging when indicated, preparatory treatment, appliances or components, temporary care, final restorations and planned reviews. Iconic Smiles’ public fees identify individual service categories; the personalised plan should explain how the recommended stages combine. Compare the written inclusions rather than infer them from a headline. [1]
Ask about alternatives and changes
The clinician should explain options that involve more or less treatment, as well as how unexpected findings would be handled. Include maintenance and possible repairs in your thinking. The choice needs to suit your teeth, priorities and budget, with costs explained before you consent.
In practical terms:
Two prices are most useful when they refer to the same clinical objective and included care. If the proposals differ, ask what benefit or limitation accounts for the difference.
Compare the clinical trade-offs
If the revised plan preserves more existing material, ask why it is suitable and what limitations remain. Evidence supports considering repair of selected composite defects, but does not establish repair as the best option in every situation. A less expensive plan needs a clinical explanation as well as a smaller total. Read the supporting clinical study
Understand how changes are agreed
Clarify whether temporary care, reviews, appliances or later maintenance are included. If findings change the proposal, ask for the revised plan and cost before proceeding. A useful first-visit financial discussion makes those boundaries understandable rather than assume that one advertised figure covers the whole course.
Identify implant and prosthesis components
If implants are involved, distinguish the fixture, restorative components and replacement teeth. Ask about grafting if proposed, interim function and the final design. The complete pathway matters more than comparing a fixture count or isolated placement fee with another practice’s differently scoped quotation. NHS patient information
Use the published service description
Iconic Smiles publishes fees for named treatment categories, including hygiene care. A public price is a useful reference for the stated service. Confirm what the actual booked appointment includes, who will provide it and whether assessment or additional treatment is a separate stage. See our current treatment fees
Include changes and future care
Request the contingency if a tooth or site proves unsuitable and the process for agreeing additional cost. Clarify supportive care and future repair responsibilities. An estimate can be staged and transparent without promising a fixed outcome for every uncertain clinical finding. Read the supporting clinical study
Clarify the whole future commitment
Before committing, understand the temporary care, later stages and maintenance you may need, including the alternatives if the preferred approach proves unsuitable. Get any conditional costs in writing. Neither the cheapest plan nor the one involving the most treatment is automatically the right choice.
Ask for the personalised estimate after assessment
The proposed treatment, reasonable alternatives, expected stages and important risks should be explained before consent. Ask which fees are established and which depend on further findings. An appointment fee and the total anticipated cost of treating the diagnosed problem are different pieces of information.
Find the reason for the difference
If you are comparing proposals before treatment, bring the first plan and estimate. Explain whether your question concerns cost, the amount of treatment, its order or what is excluded. A clinician can then explain whether the plans aim to achieve the same result. A lower price alone does not show that the first recommendation was unnecessary.
Map the fee to the stages
A complex estimate should identify the assessment, disease-control work, any surgery, temporary care and final restorations proposed. Ask which stages are essential, which depend on findings and where an elective refinement is optional. A single package figure should not hide uncertainty about the condition of individual teeth.
