Dental implants — replacing missing teeth
Immediate Dentures After Extractions: Planning the First Replacement
For someone about to have several teeth removed, an immediate denture can provide a temporary replacement at the extraction appointment rather than leaving a visible gap while the gums heal.
Explore your tooth replacement options
If you are considering replacing a tooth or several teeth, a £30 consultation gives you a chance to explain what matters most, ask questions and explore the options with our team.

For someone about to have several teeth removed, an immediate denture can provide a temporary replacement at the extraction appointment rather than leaving a visible gap while the gums heal. It is not the same as a final denture fitted to a stable ridge. The supporting tissues change as extraction sockets heal, and this affects fit, comfort and maintenance. Understanding those changes can help patients compare an immediate denture, a later definitive denture and eventual implant-supported replacement.
What makes a denture immediate?
An immediate denture is made from records taken before some or all planned extractions. It is fitted when those teeth are removed. The technician can plan tooth positions to maintain appearance and support speech, but the final fit against a healed ridge cannot be tried in advance. Adjustments and checks of the bite are expected as part of this treatment phase.
Plan extraction and temporary replacement together
The clinician assesses which teeth are truly unrestorable, gum health, bone form and the amount of support available for the appliance. Remaining teeth may provide some retention if a partial immediate denture is planned. A complete immediate denture relies on the supporting tissues and the border seal, with lower dentures often offering less suction than upper ones. The surgical plan should consider how the replacement will sit over the extraction sites. Where medical conditions or medicines influence surgery, those issues need to be resolved before fitting the temporary appliance, rather than treated as a separate afterthought.
Why fit changes during healing
Extraction sites change shape as swelling subsides and the ridge remodels over the following months. A denture that fitted acceptably at insertion may become loose or start rubbing as tissues shrink. Adjustments, temporary soft liners or relines may be considered when clinically appropriate. These follow-up stages are not automatically evidence that the denture was made badly; they reflect an inherently changing foundation. However, persistent discomfort should still be assessed rather than managed indefinitely with adhesive. Ask how many review visits are included and when a new definitive appliance might be considered.
What to expect from appearance, eating and speech
The denture may support the lips and restore a visible row of teeth, but it can initially feel bulky. Speech and chewing take practice, and the dentist may recommend softer foods as the tissues heal. Patients should receive clear written instructions about appliance wearing, cleaning and managing any bleeding or swelling, which can differ during the immediate post-extraction period. It is important not to adjust the denture at home with household tools. If there are pressure areas, the clinical team can identify and relieve them without unintentionally damaging the overall fit.
Consider implants without making promises too early
Some patients later choose implant-retained dentures or fixed implant-supported teeth. Suitability depends on available bone, medical factors, cleaning ability and the eventual restorative plan. The timing of implantation may be affected by extraction healing and whether augmentation is needed. An immediate removable denture can act as a useful transition while those decisions are made. The clinician should explain whether the design of the temporary appliance will remain useful during later stages or require replacement. The presence of a temporary denture does not guarantee eligibility for a particular full-arch implant system.
Ask for a total treatment pathway, not one denture fee
The written estimate should separate extraction, the immediate denture, early adjustments, relines and any final denture or implant stage. Establish who provides surgery and denture care and how urgent fit concerns are handled. Conventional dentures and selected implant designs offer different retention and maintenance. Comparing the likely phases, compromises and costs before extraction helps you choose.
