Tooth tipping versus bodily movement in aligner planning

Tipping changes a tooth's inclination; bodily movement aims to move the tooth as a unit rather than simply tilt its crown.

Similar crown appearances can conceal different movements

Tipping tilts a tooth, changing its angle. Bodily movement aims to move the whole tooth, including its root, rather than simply tilt the visible crown. Teeth can look similar from the front after these different movements, so a straight-looking smile alone does not show whether the planned root positions and angles have been achieved. [1]

The force system is part of the treatment

The way force is applied matters as much as the appliance chosen. A systematic review of Invisalign treatment highlights the need to match the digital plan with suitable mechanics: how the aligner grips each tooth and directs its movement. Your clinician can explain which movements your teeth need, how they will be controlled and what will be checked as treatment progresses. [1]

Predictability depends on the task

Some tooth movements are more predictable with aligners than others. Research also shows that the complexity of the case and patient-related factors affect the outcome, although the studies have limitations. The simulation shows the intended result; progress checks establish how closely your teeth are following it. [2]

Ask what would change the recommendation

A movement that is difficult with the proposed appliance may need an additional technique or a different approach. The British Orthodontic Society identifies complex movements as one reason a routine aligner plan may be insufficient. Knowing that before starting helps you compare suitable options and understand the limits of each. [3]
