Repairing your teeth
Calcified Root Canals: Planning a Difficult Treatment
A narrow canal may reflect calcification and require careful imaging and enhanced magnification rather than drilling deeper without orientation.
Talk through your options for repairing teeth
If you would like to understand how a tooth might be repaired or protected, a £30 consultation offers time to discuss your concerns and what an individual assessment may involve.

A narrow canal may reflect calcification and require careful imaging and enhanced magnification rather than drilling deeper without orientation.
Testing tooth health and reviewing the roots
The assessment includes symptoms, tests of the living tissue inside the tooth, relevant X-rays around the root and the condition of old restorations. Root shape and the amount of tooth that would remain for a reliable final seal also matter. Examination and justified imaging answer different questions when judging whether treatment can be completed safely.
Root treatment, observation and alternatives
Depending on the findings, choices may include first or repeat root treatment, selected microsurgery at the root tip, observation, a temporary stage or extraction and replacement if the tooth cannot be restored reliably. Discuss the canal's visibility, pulp tests, microscope use and whether a limited-area three-dimensional scan or specialist referral is justified.
A dark front tooth after an old injury
An older front tooth may have darkened after a past injury without causing current pain. Its canal and present health still need assessment.
Locating a narrowed canal while preserving tooth tissue
A narrowed, calcified canal may be invisible on an ordinary X-ray while an open pathway remains deeper in the root. Magnification, careful orientation and justified limited-area imaging can help preserve dentine while locating it. Forcing an instrument can create a hole through the root, known as a perforation.

Linking canal access with a restorable tooth
The decision should connect the canal findings with the chances of treating and restoring the tooth. Useful points to clarify include:
- What do the pulp tests and imaging show about whether treatment is needed?
- Would a microscope, additional imaging or specialist referral change the approach?
- How much tooth could remain for a reliable seal after access to the canal?
- What alternatives and follow-up are appropriate if the canal cannot be treated safely?
Before treatment, establish which findings are confirmed, what remains uncertain and how the tooth would be restored afterwards. Include the risks of access, reasonable alternatives and the agreed review plan.
