THE ESSENTIALS

White fillings: restoring form and function

A white filling is made from tooth-coloured composite resin and glass. It can be used to restore a decayed or broken tooth and, in selected situations, to improve chipped or uneven edges.

  • Tooth-coloured material
  • Suitable for many broken or decayed teeth
  • Can replace selected old silver fillings
  • Can be used conservatively for some cosmetic edge repairs

WHY TECHNIQUE MATTERS

The material is only part of the result.

Composite placement is technique-sensitive. Shade, isolation, contour, contact points and bite all matter if the restoration is to look natural and function predictably.

THE APPOINTMENT

Remove what is unhealthy. Preserve what is healthy.

The tooth is assessed, decay or defective material is removed where needed, and the composite is bonded in layers. The restoration is then shaped, polished and checked against your bite.

  • 01 — Assess the tooth and bite
  • 02 — Select material and shade
  • 03 — Prepare and isolate the tooth
  • 04 — Bond and layer the composite
  • 05 — Shape, polish and check the bite
AFTER TREATMENT

A little sensitivity can happen.

Most patients settle quickly after a white filling. Larger restorations can occasionally feel mildly sensitive for a short period. Persistent pain, a high bite or worsening symptoms should be reviewed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

White fillings: frequently asked questions

Will I be able to see the filling?

The aim is to match the tooth’s shade, contour and surface so the restoration blends as naturally as possible.

Is a white filling more complex than a silver filling?

Composite placement is technique-sensitive because isolation, bonding, shade and contour all influence the result.

How much do white fillings cost?

The current Iconic Smiles fee guide lists white composite fillings from £135. Exact cost depends on the tooth and complexity.

When might a filling be unsuitable?

If too little sound tooth remains, a larger restoration such as an onlay or crown may be considered. A deeply affected tooth may need root canal treatment. We assess what can be preserved and explain the alternatives.

What happens if the filling feels high or painful?

Contact the practice if your bite feels uneven or symptoms persist or worsen. An assessment can check the bite and the tooth. Do not assume continuing pain is simply an unavoidable part of having a filling.
