Root canal treatment
Root canal treatment removes infected or irreversibly inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, disinfects the canal system and seals it so the tooth can be retained where appropriate.
Treat infection inside the tooth.
The dental pulp can become inflamed or infected following deep decay, trauma, cracks or other disease. Root canal treatment aims to remove the infection while preserving the natural tooth.
- Persistent or spontaneous pain
- Pain on biting
- Lingering hot or cold sensitivity
- Swelling or infection
- Darkening after trauma can be a warning sign
Diagnose. Disinfect. Seal. Restore.
After assessment and imaging, treatment is carried out with local anaesthetic. The canals are accessed, cleaned, shaped and disinfected before being sealed. Some teeth require more than one visit.
- 01 — Clinical and radiographic assessment
- 02 — Local anaesthetic and isolation
- 03 — Clean and shape the canal system
- 04 — Disinfect and seal
- 05 — Restore the tooth and protect the remaining structure
The restoration matters too.
A root-filled tooth can be more vulnerable to fracture, particularly at the back of the mouth. Depending on how much tooth remains, a crown or other cuspal coverage restoration may be recommended.
Extraction is an option — but it changes the problem.
If a tooth cannot or should not be root treated, extraction may be considered. The resulting space may then be managed with an implant, bridge, denture or sometimes no replacement, depending on the clinical situation.
