WHEN TO CALL

Pain, swelling, trauma or something that has failed.

Dental emergencies include severe or persistent toothache, dental infection, facial swelling, knocked-out or loose teeth, fractures, broken fillings, lost crowns or bridges and some orthodontic problems.

  • Toothache or severe sensitivity
  • Swelling or suspected infection
  • Knocked-out or traumatised tooth
  • Broken tooth or filling
  • Lost crown or bridge
  • Broken orthodontic appliance
OUT OF HOURS

Know when dentistry is not enough.

Outside normal opening hours, NHS 111 can advise on urgent dental care. Severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or systemic illness with swelling requires urgent medical assessment and may require A&E.

KNOCKED-OUT ADULT TOOTH

Time matters.

Contact the practice immediately. Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root, rinse gently if dirty and avoid scrubbing. If you cannot place an adult tooth back safely, keep it moist in milk while seeking urgent dental care. Do not reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.

BROKEN OR LOST RESTORATIONS

Protect the area and arrange assessment.

If a crown or bridge comes out, keep it safe and do not use household glue. Broken fillings and teeth may leave a sharp edge; temporary dental materials from a pharmacy can sometimes protect the area until you are seen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Useful answers before you decide.

Do you keep emergency appointments?+

Emergency appointments are reserved in the diary, but availability depends on demand. Call as early as possible for triage.

What should I do with a lost Invisalign aligner?+

Contact the practice promptly. The clinical team can advise whether to return temporarily to the previous aligner while a replacement is arranged.

Should I cut a broken orthodontic wire?+

No. Contact the practice. If the end is irritating the cheek, orthodontic wax can provide temporary protection until you are assessed.
